New York is famously packed with world-class Italian spots and legendary pizzerias, but finding the best lamb skewers in NYC—the kind that truly captures the smoky, cumin-scented magic of authentic street food—is surprisingly challenging. It has been quite a while since I last traveled to China, and there are nights when I find myself deeply nostalgic for those bustling streets, sitting on tiny plastic stools with friends and washing down spicy skewers with a cold Tsingtao. While I can’t perfectly replicate that specific roadside air in New York, my determined foodie heart led me on a relentless search to find the most authentic Chinese BBQ experiences in the city. After much scouting, I’ve found three spots, each with a completely different vibe, that will satisfy your cravings for that sizzling grill and a refreshing beer.

Manhattan Chinese Food Recommendations: Self-Grilling Fun at Chubby Skewers

First on the list is a spot that brings the interactive fun of authentic Chinese BBQ houses right to the heart of Midtown: Chubby Skewers. After searching through countless restaurants, I discovered this is one of the few places in Manhattan where you can actually grill the skewers yourself at your own table! The moment you walk in, the décor transports you straight to a local eatery in China. Seeing the dining room packed with Chinese locals gave me that immediate “Ah, I found the right place” feeling. It’s a top-tier manhattan chinese food recommendation for anyone looking for an atmosphere that feels like a mini-vacation.

The best part? You get to head to the fridge and pick exactly which skewers you want. They have everything from various cuts of meat to fresh vegetables and mushrooms, all priced differently. If you’re a first-timer, don’t just “stick to one thing” immediately—grab a variety to see what hits the spot, then go back for your favorites! And here is a pro-tip: they provide whole cloves of garlic for free. We aren’t amateurs, right? You absolutely have to skewer those garlic cloves and roast them on the grill once you’ve finished your meat. It’s the “connoisseur’s move.” While the meat quality is decent (standard for the price) rather than premium, the experience of grilling with friends or a partner in the middle of Manhattan is unbeatable for the value.

Best Lamb Skewers in NYC: The Gourmet Flavors of Seven Scents

If you head over to Long Island City, you’ll find Seven Scents, a spot with a much more polished and refined atmosphere. Unlike the self-grill style, the kitchen here grills everything to perfection before serving it to your table, so you don’t have to worry about the smoky smell clinging to your clothes. While many come for what are arguably the best lamb skewers in NYC, the real surprise here is the rest of the menu—the side dishes are simply phenomenal.

This has become one of my favorite long island city hidden gems and a go-to for late night eats nyc. Our absolute favorites are the Spicy Crawfish (Mala Longsha) and the Shabu-Shabu Skewers. The crawfish comes in a massive steamer, drenched in a mouth-watering mala sauce that is spicy but not overwhelming, accompanied by perfectly cooked corn. The newer Shabu-Shabu menu features a rich, savory broth filled with napa cabbage, mushrooms, and tripe. It’s the kind of comfort food that makes a bottle of Soju or a cold beer disappear in no time. We usually prefer ordering just a few meat skewers and focusing heavily on these incredible specialty dishes. It’s the perfect spot for a proper dinner or a sophisticated late-night snack.

Best Pairing for Tsingtao Beer: The Budget-Friendly Apandi BBQ Truck

Finally, for those looking for something quick and casual, there is Apandi BBQ, a long-standing food truck near Eagle Lofts in LIC. In a city where everything feels expensive, this truck is a savior for your wallet. There is something charmingly “New York” about standing on the sidewalk late at night, grabbing a couple of skewers to go. It’s a humble, no-frills experience that works when you just need a quick bite.

To be completely honest, the flavor profile here doesn’t quite reach the heights of the other two spots. In my experience, the lamb can occasionally feel slightly undercooked, and the gizzards were a bit too tough for my liking. There’s a reason its online ratings aren’t stellar. However, if it’s the middle of the night and you are desperate for a cheap and simple best pairing for tsingtao beer to take home, it might be worth a shot just for the convenience.

Sometimes, you crave more than just a quick beer and a simple finger snack; you want light yet satisfying dishes paired with a warm cup of sake or a crisp shot of soju. That’s exactly why I wanted to share my latest best NYC Izakaya recommendation today. Recently, the NoMad area has been buzzing about a new spot called ‘Izakaya Seasun.’ Since I’m always scrolling through Instagram for the latest restaurant and bar openings, this Korean-style Izakaya caught my eye immediately. Knowing it’s already a massive brand in Korea made me even more curious. After visiting, I realized it’s definitely not your average Izakaya—the unique attention to detail in both the decor and the menu really sets it apart. Let`s start Manhattan Restaurant Review – Seasun

Experience a 1930s Kissaten Vibe at this Retro Izakaya Manhattan

Walking through the doors felt like stepping into a time machine. We were greeted by a massive, glowing tower made of soju bottles—a perfect introduction to the night. Beyond the tower, the interior was a photographer’s dream, featuring everything from vintage-style wallpaper to charming accent lighting. This place perfectly embodies a Retro Izakaya Manhattan should be, reimagining the 1930s Japanese ‘Kissaten’ (traditional tea house) style with a modern, trendy twist.

The lighting was spot-on—not too dark, not too bright—creating an incredibly cozy atmosphere. The deep green walls paired with retro floral patterns made me feel like I had walked right into a scene from a classic early 1900s drama. On top of the beautiful aesthetics, the staff were wonderfully friendly, and the menu was packed with trendy dishes you won’t find anywhere else.

Top New York City Eats: Premium Small Plates and Soju

As a fan of finding the best New York City Eats, I spent quite a while obsessing over the menu. There were so many unique items that I’ve never seen at other Izakayas. Every time I turned the page, I got more excited! But with only 90 minutes on the clock, I realized over-thinking was a luxury we couldn’t afford. “Quick, let’s just order everything!” we joked. We eventually settled on the Wagyu Beef Sashimi, Sea Bream Sashimi, and the Pork Jowl & Beef Knee Hot Pot. We worried it might be too much for two, but the portions weren’t overly large—three mains were just right for a full meal.

The Wagyu Beef Sashimi was glistening and beautifully marbled. The combination of nutty sesame oil and the buttery texture of the Wagyu literally melted in my mouth. To be honest, I often regret ordering raw beef dishes abroad because they usually use frozen meat that lacks flavor, but this was high-quality enough to satisfy my cravings for home. While it might not be a “must-pick” if you’ve had top-tier beef in Korea, it’s a solid choice for anyone missing those authentic flavors.

The real stars of the night, however, were the Sea Bream Sashimi and the Pork Jowl Hot Pot. Often in the city, sashimi is sliced way too thick, which ruins the delicate flavor and makes it feel a bit heavy. Here, the cut was perfect—thin, elegant, and fresh with a hint of yuzu that reminded me of a high-end Tokyo Izakaya.

And the Pork Jowl & Beef Knee Hot Pot! Absolute perfection! It’s a dish you won’t find at any other Izakaya in NYC. The broth was incredibly clean and refreshing, and the pork jowl was so tender it practically dissolved. The fresh chives were the perfect companion, balancing the richness of the pork. Sipping cold soju while sharing these dishes in such a special atmosphere was the highlight of my week.

The New Era of K-Town NYC Bars in NoMad

While most people head straight to 32nd Street when thinking of K-Town NYC Bars, the NoMad area near 27th Street offers a much more relaxed and hip alternative. While exploring the neighborhood, you’ll find various spots, but Izakaya Seasun truly stands out as a “hidden gem” with its distinct personality.

It was great to see a diverse crowd—not just Koreans, but people of all backgrounds—enjoying the food and the vibe. The concept of taking a traditional Japanese Izakaya and infusing it with trendy Korean “K-sensibility” is what makes this place so special. Our total bill for three mains and two bottles of soju came to about $150 including tip. Considering the quality and the Manhattan location, it actually felt like great value for the money.

Final Manhattan Restaurant Review and Tips

Wrapping up this Manhattan restaurant review, here are a few takeaways: if you’re looking for unforgettable Japanese fine dining, I recommend a Michelin-starred restaurant. However, if you want the best Izakaya experience, I strongly recommend this place. It has a unique atmosphere and dishes you won’t find at any typical Izakaya. Plus, this place is incredibly popular, so if you’re planning a weekend visit, reservations are a must to avoid a long wait. Dining out in New York is all about planning ahead!

If you want to try something truly unique, I’d suggest skipping the raw beef and going straight for the hot pot varieties. While the main K-Town strip is always fun, why not branch out and enjoy the chic, hip vibes of NoMad?

Finding a New York 24-hour restaurant that truly captures the “frozen-in-time” cinematic atmosphere is becoming a rare feat in the ever-evolving landscape of Manhattan. While the city is overflowing with sleek Michelin-starred establishments and glass-walled rooftop bars, there is a specific kind of longing that only a classic American diner can satisfy. I’m talking about that gritty, cozy, and unapologetically real vibe where the coffee is bottomless and the neon signs never flicker out. If you’ve ever dreamed of sitting in a vinyl booth at 2 AM like a character in a noir film, Diner 24 NYC is exactly where you need to be.

The Timeless Appeal of New York 24-hour restaurant

When you search for the best Manhattan diners, a few legendary names often pop up, but Diner 24 NYC stands out for its perfect blend of history and hospitality, also well-known for Manhattan late-night eats. Located in the heart of the city, it isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a living museum of New York’s social fabric. As soon as I pushed through the heavy doors, I was greeted not just by the staff, but by an energy that felt incredibly welcoming.

The interior is a masterpiece of chrome accents and warm lighting, making it feel like a meticulously designed movie set. However, the true beauty lies in the patrons—a mix of night-shift workers, theater-goers, and neighborhood legends who have likely occupied the same stools for decades. It is one of those rare New York local hidden gems where you feel like a regular before you even take your seat.

Late-Night Cravings: Burgers, Pasta, and Craft Beer

While diners are often associated with early-morning omelets, I’ve always been more of a night owl. Breakfast? Pass. Brunch? Pass. I went straight for a late-night dinner (“Dinner Go Go!”). In an atmosphere this authentic, a cold draft beer and some heavy “comfort food” felt much more appropriate than a standard latte. For anyone scouring the city for Manhattan late-night eats, the menu here is a playground of options.

We ordered the ‘Double Smash Pizza Burger’ and the ‘Spicy Homemade Cavatelli & Chicken.’ To be completely honest, I wouldn’t call this the “best burger in New York history” or a “must-eat life-changing burger,” but it was a solid, well-made meal. It had that quintessential greasy (in a good way!) cheese and a thick, juicy patty that hit the spot. It wasn’t trying to be “gourmet” with fancy oils; it was just a reliable authentic American burger NYC style. Taking a huge bite and washing it down with a cold lager—that’s my definition of a New York heaven. The pasta was equally rich, with a creamy sauce that felt like a warm hug for the stomach.

The Grand Finale: A Sugar Rush with Legendary Layer Cakes

By the time we cleared our plates, we were comfortably full, yet the dessert display beckoning from the glass case was impossible to ignore. As the saying goes, “There is always a separate stomach for dessert,” especially when faced with the kind of sweets that define the American diner experience. The cakes here are essentially “sugar spikes” in edible form, stacked high with layers of decadent frosting.

While these aren’t the delicate, refined pastries you’d find at a high-end French patisserie, they represent the heart of American indulgence. They are rustic, oversized, and unpretentious. If you have a serious sweet tooth, sharing a slice of their signature chocolate cake is a rite of passage. It’s the kind of dessert that makes you forget about your diet and simply enjoy the moment.

Why Diner 24 is the Ultimate Manhattan Sanctuary

As the hours ticked toward midnight, the vibe at Diner 24 only intensified. Watching the diverse crowd—from families celebrating a late birthday to solo writers hunched over their notebooks—reminded me why I love this city. For those seeking a reliable New York 24-hour restaurant that offers more than just calories, this place is a sanctuary. It provides a sense of continuity in a city that is always rushing toward the “next big thing.”

Modern New York is undeniably exciting, but there is a profound romance in these established haunts that offer a slice of everyday cinematic life. The next time you find yourself wandering the streets of Manhattan late at night, skip the generic fast-food chains. Head over to Diner 24, order a beer and a giant slice of cake, and let yourself sink into the authentic rhythm of the city. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after the last bite.

New York City is a culinary playground where you can find everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to global street food. Honestly, I’m not the type of person who needs bread every single day. But that’s exactly why when the craving hits, I’m extremely picky—I want nothing but the absolute best. Recently, that “sweet tooth” phase hit me hard, so I decided to embark on a month-long Best Bakery in NYC tour!

After exploring countless spots for a month, I’ve narrowed it down to three gems. My theme was “The Best of Three Worlds”: New York’s iconic cheesecake, Korean-inspired fusion art, and Japanese precision. Let’s dive into this delicious list!

Best Bakery in NYC: Eileen’s Special Cheesecake

No matter where you go in the world, you’ll see “New York Cheesecake” on the menu. Even at high-end steakhouses here, it’s the default dessert. One day, it hit me: “I’ve lived in New York for a year and a half, and I haven’t even tried the OG cheesecake yet? Am I kidding myself?” That thought sent me on a mission to find the most authentic spot, and everyone pointed me to Eileen’s Special Cheesecake.

Located in SoHo, this cozy little shop is always buzzing because it offers incredible value for the quality. It’s more of a “grab-and-go” spot, much like the famous Joe’s Pizza, so the line moves fast. Since 1974, they’ve been serving up about 21 different flavors. It’s a staple for anyone looking for the best cheesecake in NYC.

Hours: 11 AM – 8 PM (Some days close at 7 PM, so check Google Maps!)

Price: Around $7 per tart-sized cheesecake

I tried the Plain, Chocolate Strawberry, Salted Caramel, and Tiramisu. My top pick? Salted Caramel! The caramelized top was crunchy, and the inside was incredibly creamy—it felt like eating a Creme Brûlée version of a cheesecake. My husband, a coffee lover, preferred the Tiramisu flavor recommended by the staff. Since they are tart-sized, it’s perfect for trying multiple flavors by yourself!

Lysée: A Michelin-Style Korean Fusion Experience

I was living in Sweden when ‘Culinary Class Wars’ Season 1 aired, and I remember practically drooling over the screen. As soon as I moved to NYC, I saw Chef Edward Lee (the runner-up!) recommending a specific dessert cafe on YouTube. Being a huge fan, I knew I had to go. Welcome to Lysée, run by the world-renowned pastry chef Eunji Lee. My Lysée NYC review? It’s pure class and artistic brilliance.

Walking in feels like entering a high-end art gallery. The first floor has a few cozy tables, but if you’re taking out, you head to the second floor where the desserts are displayed like fine art. Because of the price, I tried to be “selective and focused,” but my dilemma was cut short because almost everything was already sold out! Pro tip: You need to get there by noon on weekends to have choices.

Price: Average $30 per item (Definitely on the pricier side!)

I managed to get the signature ‘Lysée Cake’ ($18) and the ‘Lysée Cake Collection’ ($38). The Lysée cake, with its brown rice mousse and pecan nuttiness, tasted like a luxury version of traditional Korean flavors. My favorite was the Yuzu Pound Cake—one bite, and the refreshing citrus exploded in my mouth. It was pure bliss! I’ve made it my mission to try every single item on their menu while I’m living here.

Harbs SoHo: Japanese Perfection in the Heart of NYC

If you’ve read my Osaka travel logs, you already know about Harbs SoHo. I wanted to see if the Mille Crepes I loved in Japan tasted the same in NYC. The interior and even the staff uniforms are identical to the Japanese branches. I even went in with the ambitious goal of trying their famous pasta before the cake.

Hours: 10 AM – 8 PM (Open year-round, but check Google Maps!)

Price: Around $18–$20 per slice, $26 for pasta

I wanted the Mentaiko (Pollock Roe) pasta, but it was sold out, so I went with the Seafood Tomato Pasta. Honestly? It was okay, but nothing special—reminded me of a standard upscale cafe back in Korea. However, they were very generous with the house wine, so I couldn’t help but say, “Okay, I still love you!” But the real star is the cake. The Mille Crepe, filled with fresh fruit and rich cream, was just as heavenly as I remembered. The Harbs SoHo menu is definitely worth exploring for the cakes alone.

Tips for a Successful NYC Dessert Tour

New York is a city of trends—places pop up and disappear overnight. Instead of stressing about visiting every single “famous” spot, I recommend planning your NYC dessert tour based on your daily itinerary. Just remember that for high-demand spots like these, reservations or early arrivals are mandatory.

Living in NYC and exploring these sweets taught me one thing: the best flavors in the city are those that stay true to their roots while embracing the New York vibe. I hope your next dessert break in the city is as sweet as mine!

In my last post, I shared some tips on where to find luxury items at a discount in New York’s high-end resale shops. Today, I want to introduce you to the New York Vintage Shops where true hipsters and stylists go for a real treasure hunt. As I’ve mentioned before… I’m honestly not the best at “treasure hunting” myself, so I don’t shop at these places as often as I’d like. However, for those of you who have a keen eye for unique finds—or for anyone who simply wants to experience the iconic vintage shopping in NYC—I’ve put together this guide. I’ll be introducing two famous spots in Manhattan and two must-visit locations centered in Brooklyn. Shall we start with Manhattan first?

Budget-Friendly Daily Items: Buffalo Exchange NYC

If you’re looking for a fun shopping experience or unique daily pieces without breaking the bank, Buffalo Exchange NYC is the place to go. This is a major resale chain with locations across the United States. If you’re planning to visit other cities, you can check their store locations on their Official Website. Since I live in New York, I visited the Manhattan branch. As soon as I walked in, I saw so many people shopping; the scale of the store is truly impressive. It’s a space where you can both buy an incredible variety of clothes and sell your own.

The store is well-organized with separate men’s and women’s sections. Within each section, clothes are packed onto rails by type—skirts with skirts, blouses with blouses—making it very easy to browse. This is a great spot for finding practical daily items, ranging from Zara to high-end designer pieces. To be honest, most items are mid-range brands like Zara. Prices for cheap t-shirts start at just $10, and you can find most fashion items for around $50. This place requires some serious “treasure hunting” skills to survive because there are just so many clothes. I gave up almost immediately and didn’t buy anything, but I hope you have better luck!

Right by the entrance, there’s a sign inviting you to sell your clothes. You can bring in the items you want to part with, and a staff member will check their condition and estimate a selling price on the spot. If you agree with the price, you can choose between two payment methods:

Cash: Receive 25% of the designated selling price in cash immediately.

Store Credit (Trade-in): Receive 50% of the price as a store credit card. (This is a much better deal if you’re planning to buy something new!)

The Non-Profit Hidden Gem: Housing Works Thrift Shop

Next up is Housing Works Thrift Shop, a non-profit shop that donates its proceeds to charity. If you’re planning a visit, I highly recommend the Upper East Side location. Since it’s in a wealthier neighborhood, you’re much more likely to find high-quality silk scarves or cashmere coats at a bargain. It’s a true highlight among New York Vintage Shops.

The store displays here, from the windows to the interior, are much more organized and themed. For someone like me who isn’t great at digging through piles of clothes, this is a perfect “beginner-friendly” spot to start your vintage journey. I also loved that they carry more than just fashion; you can find furniture, glassware, crystal, books, and even vinyl records at great prices. It actually brought back memories of when I lived in Sweden and used to buy furniture and dishes at vintage shops there. If you’re looking for authentic analog items, this is where you’ll find them.

While they had fewer items than Buffalo Exchange, the quality felt significantly higher and everything was well-kept. I saw a Coach leather bumper jacket for $150—it looked so cute, but since I’m past the “cute” age… I just touched it a few times with lingering regret before putting it back. As I mentioned, since this is a non-profit, they operate on a donation basis rather than buying clothes. All proceeds go toward ending HIV/AIDS and supporting the homeless. You can drop off donations in person or request a pickup on their Official Site. Plus, if you’re a U.S. resident, you can get a tax deduction for your donation!

Hip Street & Y2K Vibes: Beacon’s Closet Brooklyn

If you want to truly feel the 90s nostalgia and Brooklyn street style that’s so popular in New York right now, I recommend Beacon’s Closet Brooklyn. While they do have Manhattan locations, I definitely suggest checking out the Brooklyn branches if you’re in the area.

This shop uses a system where local fashionistas come in to sell their own collections, so it’s packed with trend-sensitive items. It feels like peeking into the actual closets of stylish New Yorkers! You also have a high chance of finding unique accessories that define Brooklyn’s vintage street fashion. As you can tell from the Google reviews, half the fun of vintage shopping in NYC here is people-watching—the customers are often just as fashionable as the clothes in Beacon’s Closet !

They also buy clothes here. Each person is limited to two large bags per day. Once the staff sets a price, you can take 30% in cash or 50% in store credit. If you’re looking to sell, this place tends to give a bit more cash than Buffalo Exchange. However, keep in mind that because it’s a favorite for fashion-forward people, their selection process for buying is quite picky.

The King of Value: L Train Vintage

Finally, we have L Train Vintage, which is primarily centered in Brooklyn. This place is truly the “King of Value.” If Manhattan has Buffalo Exchange, Brooklyn has L Train! There are tens of thousands of items packed tightly here. If you have the patience to look, you can find hip Levi’s denim or Nike windbreakers in the $20–$30 range. I recommend the Williamsburg location because the inventory moves the fastest, so you’ll always see new items.

Their operation is quite different from most other New York Vintage Shops. They have their own massive warehouses and supply chains to bring in vintage clothes in bulk. This means they never buy clothes from individuals. It’s a pure shopping destination for those who want the best deals while vintage shopping in NYC.

Wrapping Up: Create Your Own New York Fashion Story

New York’s vintage shops are more than just stores for buying and selling used goods; they are places where you can experience the city’s fashion history firsthand. I hope you use this list of recommended New York Vintage Shops to find a treasure that fits your personal taste. Even though I usually fail at the hunt… I hope you all succeed!

Heart over perfection! These essential Japanese phrases for travel will make your trip unforgettable. Check out my Osaka travel tips for dining like a local.

Writing the final chapter of my Osaka travelogue feels bitter-sweet. Before you head out, what are you preparing besides your itinerary? Is it practicing Japanese phrases for travel, making a list of must-visit restaurants, or packing essential medicines? Personally, I have a specific philosophy whenever I travel. We live in a world where English is universal and translation apps like Papago are incredible, but think about it—when we see a foreigner in Korea trying their best to say “Annyeonghaseyo” or “Gamsahamnida” in broken Korean, we naturally feel more welcoming and want to help them even more. That warmth is universal, no matter where you go.

That’s why lately, I’ve been practicing ‘using as little English as possible’ or ‘learning basic Japanese for tourists‘ before my trips. Even if I can’t make a lifelong friend, I want to at least be able to order a beer on my own. Even if my skills are clumsy and the other person smiles and replies in English, the moment you reach out in their language, a special bond and deep memories are formed that can only be felt in that place. Since this Osaka trip was planned so last minute, I didn’t have much time to study, but thanks to two “magic sentences” I brought like a cheat sheet, I not only gained a heart full of unforgettable memories but also a huge surge of affection for the people of Osaka. Today, I want to share my Osaka travel tips with you.

Ordering a Local Recommended Menu with Japanese Phrases for Travel: “Give me anything random”

The first magic sentence worked wonders at ‘Iebito Sakaba,’ an Okinawan-style Izakaya located in the Hankyu Higashi-dori shopping district. Since they had so many items on the menu, after ordering one popular dish from Google reviews and one we personally wanted, I really wanted to try ‘something truly delicious’ that only the staff knew about. Usually, when we look at a menu, we tend to order things we are already familiar with. So, I gathered my courage and tried some practical basic Japanese for tourists. It might be a bit long for a basic phrase, but hey! If you try hard, you can do it! You can even just read it off your phone!

At first, the staff member looked confused and started thinking hard. But as we shouted “Secret, Secret!” with sparkling eyes, they gave us a big grin and brought out a dish. It was ‘Pork Cartilage Karaage’! Usually, chicken karaage is the standard, so pork cartilage was very unique. The moment I tasted it—the unique texture, the crispy batter, and the perfect seasoning—it was undeniably the best dish I had at that restaurant.

The staff seemed to enjoy the unique interaction as well, creating a strange sense of bond. Later, when we happened to pass each other on the street, we waved and greeted each other like old friends. Since that first experience was so successful, I asked the staff everywhere I went after that! “Could you just give us one of your favorite dishes without telling us what it is?” I offer a small apology to the staff who might have struggled with the sudden request, but it was so much fun. The excitement of not knowing what was coming and the trust in a staff recommendation made the experience truly enjoyable. It was a joy I discovered from day one.

Osaka Travel Tips & Dining in Japan: The Class of “Gochisosama-deshita”

Everyone knows “Itadakimasu,” the greeting before a meal. But guys! How long are you going to say the same thing everyone knows? Don’t you want to express your gratitude in a more special way than the average tourist? That’s why I found this magic sentence! It’s the greeting of gratitude to the person who prepared the meal after you’re finished. This phrase captured the chef’s heart instantly:

This greeting is considered much more polite and sincere than the shorter versions tourists often use, and it’s the highest praise for a chef. At the Sushi Omakase restaurant we visited, my sister and I stood side-by-side, bowed deeply, and said this to the chef. The look of touched emotion on the faces of the chef and staff was unmistakable. Even the Japanese customers sitting next to us burst out laughing and gave us very friendly looks. We used this greeting at every restaurant we truly enjoyed.
The Clumsy Charm of “Nandeska?” and “Dokeska?”: Essential Osaka Travel Tips

Lastly, a very useful Osaka travel tip is using “Nandeska? (What is it?)” and “Dokeska? (Where is it?)”. Even if you can’t form a perfect sentence, if you just put these after the object you’re curious about, people usually understand. Japanese people are famous for their kindness, so if you successfully ask for directions—even with poor English—they will usually take responsibility and help you find the way. I always approached people with “Sumimasen~ [Place Name] ga Dokeska?” to ask for help.

Once, at an Yebisu beer house, the Wi-Fi wasn’t working, so I confidently shouted to the waiter, “Wi-Fi Nandeska? Dokeska?” Actually, I wanted to ask, “What is the Wi-Fi password? Where is the router?” but only those short words came out of my mouth. The waiter burst out laughing and helped me while finding me incredibly ‘cute.’ Receiving ‘cuteness’ at my age was such an exciting experience! Even though it was “Konglish-style” Japanese, my heart was 100% communicated.

What about you? Through this trip, I realized once again that sincerity is more important than linguistic perfection. Just prepare one or two Japanese phrases for travel that are a bit unusual but interesting. You’ll succeed in dining in Japan, enjoy local recommended menus, and your trip will be filled with much warmer and deeper colors.

A practical Osaka Dotonbori itinerary for those who want to see the main sights efficiently. Includes an honest review of Kuromon Market and a special whisky tasting session at Ultra Market.

An Osaka Dotonbori itinerary was something I hesitated to write at first because I had already found so many hidden local gems in the Umeda area. However, I realized that for many travelers, a trip to Osaka wouldn’t be complete without visiting its most iconic landmark. So, we decided to tackle Dotonbori head-on, focusing on a highly efficient route that allowed us to experience everything we wanted in a single day.

Our journey through this Osaka Dotonbori itinerary turned out to be surprisingly fun, leading us to life-changing takoyaki found by chance, adorable cat plushies that made me scream with joy, and legendary local spots. Here is my honest and detailed review of the most famous tourist spots in the city.

Unexpected Luck on the Osaka Dotonbori itinerary: Wanaka Takoyaki

Dotonbori greeted us with its flashy neon signs and overwhelming crowds. It was so packed that you practically had to wait in line just to walk down the street. We quickly snapped photos at the famous spots and decided to move on, as we aren’t big fans of extreme crowds. As we headed toward our next stop, we started looking for something to eat and stumbled upon Wanaka Takoyaki Dotonbori.

While other famous stalls had endless lines, the queue here moved quickly, so we hopped in. To our surprise, it was the best takoyaki of my life! My sister, who was on her second trip to Osaka, even said it was far better than the places she had waited hours for previously.

Later, I found out this place had been featured in the Michelin Guide. It was the epitome of “crispy on the outside, soft on the inside,” with octopus pieces the size of my thumb. It was a true hidden-in-plain-sight gem.

An Honest Kuromon Market Review and a Cat Rescue

Next on our list was the famous “Osaka’s Kitchen,” Kuromon Market. While it is a staple in many travel guides, I have to give a blunt Kuromon Market review: it was quite disappointing. The prices were shockingly high—a single crab leg cost as much as a mini-omakase course at a nice sushi restaurant. I ended up just having a piece of fruit and leaving. If you are looking for the charm of a traditional local market with reasonable prices, I strongly suggest you skip it.

However, the mood shifted when we found a tiny shop filled with cat plushies on the way to our next destination. I actually let out a loud scream—”Kyaaa!”—surprising everyone around me. There were so many chubby, adorable “fat cats” looking for their new owners. As a cat person, this unexpected encounter completely healed the disappointment I felt at the market.

Osaka Ultra Market Whisky: A Paradise for Collectors

Cheered up by the cats, we arrived at the Osaka Ultra Market whisky paradise. This place is a hybrid between a drugstore and a liquor shop, and it’s a holy grail for whisky lovers. They offer a wide variety of Japanese whiskies and sakes, and the staff is very welcoming to international travelers, offering convenient shipping services.

The main highlight of Ultra Market is definitely the tasting corner.

While not every bottle is the absolute cheapest in Japan, the ability to taste and compare a massive lineup—different from what you find at the Yamazaki Distillery—is a huge advantage. If you love spirits, this is a mandatory stop on your trip.

Finishing at Izakaya Takumi Osaka

We ended our day at Izakaya Takumi Osaka. This isn’t a flashy, touristy restaurant; it’s a cozy, nostalgic place where locals go for a quiet drink after work.

The atmosphere was wonderfully warm and authentic, and the staff were incredibly kind. Sipping on cold beer and sake while enjoying honest, comforting snacks felt like pure happiness. However, because it is a local neighborhood spot, the food is quite standard—simple and traditional rather than groundbreaking. While I enjoyed the vibes, I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a “must-return” spot, but it was a perfect way to wrap up our hectic day.

A dream come true for whisky lovers! My visit to the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. Discover why this nostalgic and peaceful spot is a must-visit near Osaka, featuring rare whisky tastings and scenic views.

The Yamazaki Distillery was the place I put the most effort into planning for this Osaka trip, and it remains the most lingering memory. I truly love alcohol—except for beer, which fills me up too quickly, I enjoy almost all types of spirits. My obsession with whisky began about nine years ago, and do you know which one introduced me to this world? It was Japan’s representative whisky, Yamazaki. With its rich aroma and smooth finish, the moment I took my first sip, I thought, “This is it! My life-long whisky.”

I actually didn’t realize there was such a wonderful Yamazaki Distillery near Osaka, but my travel companion—a true ‘whisky master’—guided me there. Not only could I enjoy the history and tasting of my favorite whisky, but I also encountered special bottles available only here. Above all, the neighborhood was so peaceful and beautiful that I wished I could have stayed for a night if my schedule allowed.

How to Get to Yamazaki Distillery: The Most Efficient Route from Umeda

How to get to Yamazaki Distillery? Traveling from central Osaka (Umeda) is surprisingly quick. One of the reasons I chose a hotel in the Umeda area, specifically the ibis budget Osaka Umeda, was because it’s so convenient for day trips. When planning a short 3-night, 4-day trip, time efficiency is the most important factor.

The easiest way is to use the JR Kyoto Line. From JR Osaka Station (Umeda), take a train heading toward Kyoto and get off at Yamazaki Station. It’s a comfortable 25-minute ride. The train wasn’t too crowded, and watching the scenery change from the city to the peaceful outskirts was quite exciting.

Once you exit the station, the distillery is about a 10-minute walk away. Everything from the cute station building to the path along the way was charming and nostalgic. To reach the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, you have to cross a railroad track. It felt like a scene from a movie—waiting for the train to pass, the signal turning green, and then crossing the tracks. It felt like I was the protagonist of a film. Seeing other visitors walking back with a bottle of whisky in their hands gave me a sense of relief and excitement, knowing I was on the right path.

Yamazaki Distillery tour Reservation Types and Success Tips

This place is incredibly popular, so booking in advance is mandatory. If you go without a reservation, you might be turned away at the entrance. The tours are divided into two main types:

Yamazaki Distillery Manufacturing Process Tour: A guided tour where you see the whisky-making process (Approx. 80 mins, 3,000 JPY).

Yamazaki Whisky Museum Viewing (Free / Reservation Required): A course that allows you to use the museum, gift shop, and tasting lounge without the process tour.

Reservation Site: [Link Here]

Reservations for the Yamazaki Distillery open on the official website at the beginning of each month for the following month, and the competition is fierce—it requires serious “fast-clicking.” Since we planned our trip last minute, we missed the manufacturing tour, but luckily, we succeeded in booking the Yamazaki Whisky Museum Viewing. Since our goal was “Tasting! Definitely tasting!! I’m going to try every kind!!!” rather than a history lesson, we were beyond happy just to get in. The museum is beautifully designed, with exhibits showing the evolution of Yamazaki whisky, making it a great place for photos. Secretly, my heart was already racing toward the tasting lounge!

Special Menus at the Yamazaki Whisky Tasting Lounge

The Suntory Yamazaki Whisky museum viewing was great (I mean it!), but our real goal was the ‘Yamazaki Whisky Library’ and tasting lounge on the 1st floor. Here, you can enjoy rare, high-aged whiskies that are hard to find elsewhere at very reasonable prices as part of a Yamazaki whisky tasting trial.

Yamazaki 12 / 18 / 25 Years: The 25-year-old costs tens of thousands of yen per glass in bars, but you can taste it relatively cheaply here.

Distillery Exclusive Whiskies: A special lineup of raw whiskies (New Pot) only available at the distillery.

Hibiki & Hakushu Lineup: Suntory’s pride, including Hibiki 21 and Hakushu 18, are also available for trials.

The menu clearly lists names like ‘Yamazaki 12yr Single Malt’, and there are great value sampler sets for beginners. It was a huge thrill to savor and compare these premium lines side-by-side, which would usually be too expensive to buy by the bottle. We ended up enjoying a “morning drink” with the sampler and left happily with our hands full of Yamazaki Distillery exclusive whiskies!

Highly Recommended for Whisky Lovers Planning a Day Trip

What was as good as the sampler we enjoyed was the atmosphere of the town. Since better water makes better alcohol, distilleries are usually located in places with great mountains and water. From the moment I arrived, I kept thinking I wanted to stay here for a day.

For those short on time, a day trip is plenty to enjoy both the town and the whisky. If you have a flexible schedule, I recommend staying nearby to enjoy the tranquility. For any whisky lover, the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Escaping the busy city to get “drunk” on the aroma of whisky is something I hope you all experience. I wish you victory in the reservation battle!

A personal journey through Nakazakicho Cafe District in Osaka. Experience a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of old-school art districts, featuring local artisan shops and hidden cafes.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Osaka? Is it the bustling streets of Dotonbori? Or perhaps the flashy neon signs and the iconic Glico Man? While those vibrant sights are wonderful, the place that left the deepest impression on me after my trip was actually the Nakazakicho Cafe District. In a city filled with crowded shopping malls and modern skyscrapers, discovering this peaceful neighborhood felt like stepping into a time machine and being transported to a bygone era of Japan.

The Nakazakicho Cafe District is a truly special area that miraculously escaped the air raids of World War II. As a result, many old houses from the Showa era remain perfectly preserved. These weathered wooden buildings and narrow alleyways have been revitalized by young artists into stylish cafes and ateliers, creating an atmosphere that is uniquely nostalgic yet “hip.” Walking through these charming streets under a clear blue sky felt like a natural healing process. With so many photogenic spots and local shops to explore, there wasn’t a single dull moment.

Simple Joys Found in the Alleys of Nakazakicho Cafe District

If you are familiar with Seoul’s Garosu-gil or the artistic vibes of DUMBO and Williamsburg in Brooklyn, you might recognize the pattern of a neighborhood’s evolution. Usually, young artists move to slightly peripheral areas to escape high rents, opening their own creative spaces and ateliers. As these areas gain popularity, they often face “gentrification,” where large corporations take over and rising rents force the original creators out. However, Nakazakicho Cafe District still retains that pure, early-stage energy of a blossoming art district.

This place actually reminded me of the time I first lived with my sister in Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil in Seoul. Back then, it wasn’t developed at all, but people created their own ateliers in old buildings to work on and sell their art. Delicious local restaurants started popping up nearby, and it felt like having a secret hideout. It was one of the most cherished and enjoyable times of my life. Walking through Nakazakicho brought those memories flooding back, making me feel quite emotional.

There are no flashy billboards or massive buildings here—just small wooden structures huddled together. Every tiny alley felt precious. Interestingly, while there were some tourists, there were plenty of locals too, creating a perfect balance for a relaxed trip. While it wasn’t a “locals-only” spot, it wasn’t overly crowded either, allowing me to fully soak in the atmosphere. From the moment I stepped into the Nakazakicho Cafe District, I couldn’t stop taking photos; every corner was a picture-perfect scene.

Inspiring Nakazakicho Shops and Cafe Hopping

The charm of this area doesn’t just stop at its “oldness.” The scent of fragrant coffee wafting through old window frames and the green vines climbing up the brick walls create a profound sense of warmth. The various Nakazakicho shops are each so unique that you can easily lose track of time just browsing.

The local shops tucked away in every corner were truly captivating. Instead of mass-produced items, it was a joy to see handmade goods and vintage dishware that reflected the owner’s personal taste. Even without buying anything, just looking at the beautifully decorated window displays gave me so much inspiration. I found myself thinking, “If I ever open my own shop, I’d love to decorate it like this!” I eventually turned off Google Maps and let my feet lead the way, feeling a strange sense of freedom where I didn’t even worry about getting lost.

The Essence of Osaka Retro Travel: Discovering ONLY PLANET

Official sites like the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) often introduce this area as an “art village where the past and present coexist.” After visiting, I immediately understood why it is so beloved. Even without grand landmarks, the warm sunlight hitting the old bricks and the sight of stray cats napping peacefully were enough to wash away all my travel fatigue.

During our exploration, we finally found a shop that made us open our wallets! It was ONLY PLANET [動物雑貨ONLY PLANET(オンリープラネット)].

My sister always buys high-quality wooden chopsticks whenever she visits Japan because of their great value. We were searching for something unique and stumbled upon this gem. I didn’t even know they sold chopsticks at first; I was lured in by the adorable cat figurines that looked just like my cats back home. The moment I saw chopsticks that looked exactly like my cats, ‘Palace’ and ‘Poka-chip,’ I knew I had to buy them! The owner was incredibly kind, and the items weren’t just pretty—the quality was excellent too.

Tips for Those Planning to Visit Nakazakicho Cafe District

If you love coffee, are tired of overcrowded streets, or want to experience the old-fashioned charm of Japan, you must visit the Nakazakicho Cafe District. Getting to Nakazakicho is very easy as it is only one stop away from Umeda Station, making it highly accessible. Our hotel, the Ibis Budget Osaka Umeda, was only a 10-minute walk away, which was perfect. I would definitely visit this district and stay at this hotel again on my next trip to Osaka.

While there are many famous coffee shops in the area, they tend to be quite crowded. Since we were already immersed in the quiet vibe of the streets, we decided to skip the “famous” spots and just enter a cute cafe that caught our eye. I personally recommend arriving in the early afternoon, enjoying a stroll through the alleys, and then settling into a cozy cafe with a book. (For more details on the cafes we visited, please check out my other post, [Osaka Dessert Cafes: A 3-Day Sweet Hopping Guide].)

If you want to discover the hidden charms of Osaka, you will undoubtedly fall in love with the Nakazakicho Cafe District. I hope you get to experience this unique retro atmosphere for yourself!

A deep dive into Osaka's soul food. We compare the thick savory pancakes of Osaka with Tokyo's gooey Monjayaki, featuring must-visit spots like Moheji in Umeda and the traditional Sakura.

With so many famous Japanese dishes, the biggest dilemma when traveling to Japan is always: “How can I fit all these delicious meals into my schedule?” From sushi and sashimi to yakitori, the list is endless. However, hunting for the best okonomiyaki in Osaka was the highlight I looked forward to the most this trip.

This dish actually originated during the post-war era when food was scarce, using relief aid flour mixed with cabbage and scraps of meat. It shares a very similar historical background with a famous dish in Korea called “Army Stew” (Budae-jjigae). The name “Okonomiyaki” literally means “grilled as you like,” and watching the chef prepare it on a sizzling grill right before your eyes is a performance that makes it one of Japan’s most iconic soul foods.

During this trip, I discovered another charming variety called “Monjayaki.” The main monjayaki vs okonomiyaki difference lies in the batter’s consistency and how it’s cooked. While the okonomiyaki you are likely familiar with is thick and crispy—almost like a savory cake—monjayaki uses a much more watery broth and is spread thinly on the grill. When I asked what it was, my friend whispered, “I’m sorry, but it looks a bit like someone threw up… but trust me, it’s amazing!” I almost lost my temper at that description, but once I saw it, I had to admit the comparison was spot on. The fun part is using a tiny spatula to scrape the salty, gooey batter off the grill—it’s the perfect snack for a cold beer.

Best Okonomiyaki in Osaka and Its Rival: Moheji Lucua Osaka Review

If you’re shopping in the Umeda area, you must visit Moheji Lucua Osaka on the 10th floor. Famous for the long lines at its original branch in Tokyo, this spot is very popular among young locals and travelers for its chic atmosphere. We waited nearly an hour just to get in!

We ordered the popular Mentaiko and Mochi Monjayaki with extra cheese—a foolproof combination. Watching the staff cook it at our table was agonizing, much like the long wait for pork belly to crisp up on a BBQ grill. The salty roe, chewy mochi, and rich cheese were incredibly delicious. If you enjoy the crispy rice at the bottom of a pot, you’ll love the “okoge” (burnt bits) of the monjayaki. If you don’t like rich flavors, you can try it without the cheese.

The Traditional Charm of Sakura Okonomiyaki Osaka

After the monjayaki, I craved the authentic Osaka taste. We headed to Sakura Okonomiyaki Osaka in the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai. Rather than being flashy, this is a cozy, local Osaka street food guide favorite where you can see office workers grabbing lunch.

The okonomiyaki here was exactly the classic taste I expected. Sitting at the large counter and watching the dish come to life was just as good as eating it. The sweet cabbage and thick batter were deeply satisfying. The signature sauce and mayo topping made me realize why Osaka is the home of this dish. I recommend the “Mixed” type with seafood and meat. Also, the yakisoba is great, so try ordering one of each!

This trip allowed me to experience two teppan dishes that are similar yet completely different. While both were great, preferences vary. My sister, who loves cheese, chose the monjayaki, while I preferred the hearty satisfaction of Sakura’s okonomiyaki. Which one would you prefer?
